But, I understand where yer writer is coming from.

Getting yer shit changed is like getting whacked in the gonads by Ronaldo. Sometimes it makes it better, sometimes not but it's always difficult.

Still, it's fairly standard practice for an editor to run changes past an author before publishing.

And, yeah you don't NEED their permission, but it makes you come across as less arrogant if you get it.
